Our History...

After the Second World War ended, the main amateur drama group based in Canterbury was the Canterbury Dramatic Society, which was established in the 1950s. In 1951, members of the society broke away and started another theatre group called Playcraft.

Playcraft would disband, and then be reestablished in the 1960s, where it would exist in tandem with the Canterbury Dramatic Society; both drama groups would call the Gulbenkian Theatre their home.

Eventually, in 2003 both groups would merge and become the group known today as The Canterbury Players.

Below are some photographs and progammes from the days of the Canterbury Dramatic Society - all information and memorabilia has been kindly provided by David Pentin.
